Today's Devotional Scripture

Today's Verse

Think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected.
~Philippians 4:8 NCV

Thoughts on today's verse...

I believe I should adopt the above verse as the criteria I use for watching television and movies. Often after-the-fact I find that the program or movie I've watched was in total opposition of the above verse and it leaves me cold and disappointed with myself for allowing the "media" to try to use their specific medium to influence me. Have you noticed how many programs involve the occult, or portray Christians as weak-minded individuals or even try to promote a specific political agenda?

Most movies have resorted to the use of the four letter vulgar slang. It makes me wonder about the intelligence of the screen writers. Do they think we all use this language?

I think I use television as a drug when I get home from work. A mindless exercise whereby I can escape for a period of time. Perhaps I should declare a moratorium on the television and find something more worthy of my time...

I think it's a simple as the children's song, "Be Careful Little Eyes What You See, Be Careful Little Ears What You Hear..." "For the Father up above, is looking down with love, so be careful ..."

My prayer...
Lord, may I honor You with those things I occupy my time with. ~Amen!

Yours, because we're His,

  1. Hold onto your hat, Tamara, but I stopped watching television about 8 years ago...however, I do watch rented movies and they can be downright appalling! Like you, I wonder what they are thinking...are four letter words in every other sentence necessary to their plot?? It has often ruined what could have been a good movie and I have even walked away and then Michael watches the rest alone.

    blessings on you,

  2. You know Marcy, I hear those words too often in the prison environment. Staff... inmates... When an inmate uses it in the library, I take their ID card and give them a word assignment. They have to provide me with 10-socially acceptable words for the one vulgar slang they chose to use in the library. It is sometimes challenging to get them to come up with proper, socially acceptable word, if necessary I provide them with the first word and a dictionary! LOL
